Reading to Children

With May being Scholastic National Family Reading Month, I thought it would be a good opportunity to revisit the importance of reading to children to promote their literacy development.  Reading to children helps to develop their vocabulary, their knowledge of sentence structures and literary elements, fosters an interest in many and varied topics and exposes them to the wonder of imaginary worlds and characters.  The Scholastic National Family Reading Month aims at promoting family involvement in reading activities.  The website provides a range of ideas and activities to inspire families to read together.

Continuing along the same theme, Leah of Your Dime Your Time, posted on icanteachmychild.com 7 things parents should do with their children while reading aloud.  While they may be simple ideas, if executed, a child's reading experience will be more valuable.

Leah's Seven Things You Should Be Doing as You're Reading to Your Child:
1.  Read the Title, Author's Name, and Illustrator's Name
2.  Ask your child to make predictions
3.  Ask your child what is happening
4.  Move your finger as you read
5.  Ask qestions
6.  Reread the same books again...and again...and again
7.  Really enjoy the book with your child
